T-Mobile Netherlands adds 'roam like home' to postpaid plans

2015-01-12 10:40:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile Netherlands is reducing the cost of roaming, so customers can use their mobile phones at domestic rates when traveling in the EU. Incoming calls, as well as sending and receiving SMS will be free. Calls when roaming will be limited to 120 minutes per month at national rates, taken from the customer's monthly bundle. After that, customers pay their normal out-of-bundle rate of EUR 0.30 per minute. Data services will still be subject to the EU's regulated rates or T-Mobile's own Travel & Surf data passes for roaming. The new offer is valid in the EU, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland for customers signing a new contract from 19 January. The changes are part of T-Mobile's new plans, 'Stel Samen & Stel Bij', available from 19 January. As earlier announced, the new plans separate the cost of acquiring a phone from the subscription fees and allow customers to change their bundle allowances on a month-to-month basis.

T-Mobile US beats target for postpaid customer growth

2015-01-07 16:00:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) T-Mobile US reported strong-than-expected customer growth in the fourth quarter and beat its full-year forecast for postpaid growth. The mobile operator added a net 2.1 million customers in Q4, for a total of just over 55 million, an increase of 17.9 percent year-on-year. In the retail postpaid market, T-Mobile gained 1.3 million new customers in the quarter and added over 1.0 million new phones to its network. For the full year 2014, the company reported the net addition of 4.9 million retail postpaid subscribers, better than its already improved guidance of 4.3-4.7 million. In Q4, the operator also added 266,000 prepaid customers, mainly under the MetroPCS brand, and 586,000 wholesale customers (152,000 in M2M and 434,000 at MVNOs). T-Mobile said the figures show it continues to win market share from its bigger rivals. The company gave figures for the postpaid porting market in Q4 showing it was winning 1.4 customers for every one lost to Verizon, 1.8 versus AT&T and 2.2 versus Sprint. Despite the strong increase in customers, T-Mobile said it was "managing the balance between growth and profitability". It did not give any profit figures, ahead of a full annual report in February.

T-Mobile to test Ericsson LTE small cell in 5 GHz band

2015-01-05 17:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) Ericsson announced plans to use unlicensed spectrum to help boost indoor mobile phone coverage. The company said it aims to be the first to offer License Assisted Access (LAA) small cells, expected to hit the market in Q4 2015. T-Mobile US plans to start testing the small cells this year already. LAA is an LTE-Advanced technology that enables carrier aggregation of licensed spectrum with unlicensed bands to enhance network coverage and capacity. Using only 4 percent of the 5 GHz band, LAA can provide up to a 150 Mbps speed increase to smartphone users, Ericsson said. Ericsson said its LAA devices also incorporate "fair sharing" within the 5 GHz band, to accommodate Wi-Fi devices already using the band. Ericsson is adding LAA to its indoor small cell portfolio including the Ericsson Radio Dot System for medium and large buildings and the Ericsson RBS 6402 Indoor Picocell for smaller buildings under 50,000 square feet.
