KPN Q1 sales down 8%, EBITDA falls 22%
2014-04-25 08:37:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN announced first-quarter revenues down 8 percent to EUR 2.00 billion, hurt by price pressure and competition, especially on the mobile and business markets. EBITDA fell 22 percent from a year earlier to EUR 624 million, and net profit dropped 98 percent to EUR 3 million. Free cash flow at the Dutch operator was a negative EUR 292 million. KPN said it still expects results to stabilise towards the end of this year and maintained its full-year outlook. Capex is expected to be less than EUR 1.4 billion this year and below EUR 1.5 billion in 2015, including Reggefiber. Free cash flow should also grow from next year. The company is also confident it will complete the sale of E-Plus to Telefonica Deutschland, which should allow it to restore dividend payments.
KPN to test live TV service over 4G
2014-03-12 10:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN announced plans for a trial of live TV service for mobile customers. A group of customers subscribed to its quad-play offer KPN Compleet will be asked to participate in the three-month trial, with the associated data for the service not deducted from their monthly allowances. KPN said the service will be available on both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets and include 16 channels: Discovery, Comedy Central, National Geographic, Animal Planet, BBC World, Kindernet, Nickelodeon, MTV, CNN, Xite, TLC, Videotheek TV and the Flemish channels Ketnet, Canvas and Een. None of the main Dutch channels are included. A report on the site Tweakers.net said KPN was in talks with RTL to add its channels, but the two cannot agree on a price. According to the Dutch operator, its 4G network makes the live TV service possible, and the aim of the trial is to test out new possibilities for interactive TV over 4G. The operator cited a survey on the site Peil.nl showing growing adoption of on-demand TV and watching TV on the go in the Netherlands. A majority of under-30s (65%) said they expect watch as much or more TV on-demand than through traditional channels within five years. Almost 40 percent said they expect then tobe available to watch on-demand where and when they like.
