JOB DESCRIPTION This work package is intended to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in Computer System Engineering at ESAC for the missions science operations centres. Computer Systems Engineer for Herschel Science Operations

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 20 engineers and scientists at ESAC including support to Herschel. We require a service to be provided by a parttime circa 50 software engineer with experience in system administration and support, preferably in a science operations environment. ESA will award the work to the company with the best proposal and Auroras existing experience on providing support to the Computer Support Group CSG and the Herschel mission is beneficial to our commitment to produce an excellent proposal to ESA. Overview The work is to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in Computer Systems Engineering at ESAC for the operations of the Herschel Science Centre HSC. The Herschel Space Observatory was launched in May 2009. It performed astronomical photometry and spectroscopy in the far infrared and submillimetre 57670 micron wavelength range. Its scientific payload consisted of three instruments using a variety of detector technologies developed by Principal Investigator teams at various institutions, predominantly in Europe but with a significant contribution from the US. The majority of its observing time was provided to the general user community, via annual Calls for Proposals. Since May 2013, the Herschel spacecraft has had no liquid helium coolant remaining to allow the science instruments on board to operate, hence regular operations have ceased and the spacecraft has been placed into a nonreturning Solar orbit. In the ongoing postoperations phase, the Herschel Science Centre HSC, located at ESAC, is, inter alia, responsible for supporting data analysis improvements, oversight of the calibration and crosscalibration of the science instruments, and the generation of standard science products and their quality assessment as final Herschel archive products. All observational data has been systematically processed to generate these products that are distributed to the astronomical community via the Herschel Science Archive HSA, developed and maintained at ESAC. With the complete set of data from mission operations now in hand it is possible to further improve the calibration and data products in the archive. The SREO Computer Support Group CSG is providing computer support to all science operations centres and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. Under this work package, service shall be provided to support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Oracle Solaris, Macintoshes, Technical PCs and for Office Automation activities. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. Specific tasks would include installation, configuration, deployment, integration, monitoring, administration and maintenance of these computer systems, scientific and commercial software installation and administration, data backup and retrieval, interface with IT vendors for quotation, installation and maintenance agreements, users IT support, defining and operating computers operational procedures, hardware inventory tracking. It specifically excludes ESA corporate informatics infrastructure services office automation, network, terminal servers, Lotus Notes, LAN and communications, which are provided and subject to separate Service Level Agreements SLA. Be able to provide the service during normal ESA working days and working hours, with some flexibility to allow exceptional cases of oncall andor extra time support. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain. Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the ESAC, the European Space Astronomy Centre, at Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. Contract You will be registered for both social security and tax in Spain. This is a part time position. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 29 annual days holiday, which will be prorated according to the confirmed hours. In addition to public health services Aurora provides private medical insurance in Spain. Training to improve efficiency and provide strength for future career are of course included.
