Soil around Fukushima site remains contaminated with dangerous radioactive waste
2015-04-19 01:16:47| Waste Management - Topix.net
The soil surrounding the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant remains contaminated with radioactive cesium, with a high risk that those atoms could transfer to food crops, suggests a study conducted by researchers from Kyoto Prefectural University and published in the Journal of Environmental Quality . The March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan triggered multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima plant, causing the plant to eject a radioactive plume into the atmosphere that spread across Japan's countryside and the northern hemisphere.

Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide limits soil storage
2015-04-15 17:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: Carbon dioxide, the major cause of global warming, is released to the atmosphere when oil, coal, and gasoline are burned. Soils contain the largest pool of terrestrial organic carbon, helping counteract rising carbon dioxide levels and thus potentially playing a key role in modulating climate change. Carbon accumulates in soil through many years of plant photosynthesis and is lost from soil as microscopic organisms, mostly bacteria and fungi, decompose soil carbon, converting it back to carbon dioxide...

Reduce soil compaction, increase productivity
2015-04-14 22:43:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Field traffic lanes register 66% more compaction than growing zones on this farm. Charlie Hammer has never done the same thing for too long, except when it comes to wheels on soil. He has deliberately traveled the same controlled-traffic lanes on his Beaver Dam, Wis., farm to limit soil compaction. read more

MICHELIN OFFERS TIPS FOR REDUCING SOIL COMPACTION
2015-04-14 06:00:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
GREENVILLE, S.C., April 14, 2015 — Faced with lower commodity prices, farmers are looking for any edge to improve productivity and crop performance. As the 2015 growing season gets under way, experts say one of the most effective ways to improve yield is to minimize soil compaction by using tires that can operate at a lower air pressure. read more
