May 2014 WASDE: Higher corn yields and record soybean production expected for 2014

2014-05-09 21:23:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

Source: USDA The USDA released the monthly WASDE report on May 9, estimating corn production up from the record 2013-14 year with higher corn yields offsetting reduced plantings. Average corn price is projected down to $3.85-$4.55. Soybean production is at record highs due to record yields and harvested area. Average price has dropped to $9.75-11.75. read more

U.S. corn yields increasingly vulnerable to hot, dry weather

2014-05-03 16:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Science Recorder: Corn, the backbone of much of the American Midwest, may be more vulnerable to droughts than it was just two decades ago, according to a new study published in the journal Science. The study was conducted by David Lobell, an associate professor of environmental Earth science at Stanford University. "The Corn Belt is phenomenally productive," said Lobell in a statement to PHYS.Org News, "but in the past two decades we saw very small yield gains in non-irrigated corn under the hottest conditions....

U.S. corn yields are increasingly vulnerable to hot, dry weather

2014-05-02 08:53:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Science Blog: Corn yields in the central United States have become more sensitive to drought conditions in the past two decades, according to Stanford research. The study, which appears in the journal Science, was led by Stanford`s David Lobell, associate professor of environmental Earth system science and associate director of the Center on Food Security and the Environment. "The Corn Belt is phenomenally productive," Lobell said, referring to the region of Midwestern states where much of the country`s corn...

On-farm experiments increase corn, soybean yields

2014-04-25 21:34:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

Applied science and curiosity pays off for Watson Farms. Would you believe that the corn ears from plants emerging on Day 1 would be 13% fatter than the corn ears from Day-2-emerged corn? Thats exactly what played out at Watson Farms, Villa Grove, Ill., last year on a test of a 40-ft. section of one row. You could say the Watsons corn stood the test of time. read more

Projected corn, soybean yield versus trend line yields in 2013

2013-09-18 21:48:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

Source: University of Illinois On Sept. 12, the USDA released revised projections of 2013 state corn and soybean yields. Also released were 2013 projected crop reporting district (CRD) yields for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. These projected yields are compared to 2013 trend yields to assess which areas of the country are having better relative corn and soybean yields than other areas. read more
