(Telecompaper) Telkom and Airtel Kenya plan to merge operations as a first step to acquiring all of Airtel's assets, creating a stronger challenger to market leader Safaricom, Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources. A source at the communication authority said the two firms have been engaging officials over the plan to share outlets and infrastructure, such as transmission assets, before Telkom acquires Airtel Kenya at an unspecified time. According to the source, the two operators are yet to make a formal application to the regulator disclosing all the details.

South African government confirms plan to sell unspecified stake in Telkom

(Telecompaper) Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has announced that the South African government will be selling some of its shares in Telkom to meet budget requirements, as expenditure is estimated to overshoot its targets by ZAR 3.9 billion, BusinessTech reported. According to Gigaba, sluggish economic growth in 2017 has caused a significant reduction in the tax revenue outlook, which has eroded the government's fiscal position.

Telkom to make BlackBerry phones for Indonesian market

(Telecompaper) BlackBerry has announced a deal for a joint venture in Indonesia to produce BlackBerry phones. The newly formed joint venture BB Merah Putih will receive a licence to BlackBerry software and services for the production of handsets for the Indonesian market. While BlackBerry's strategy has shifted to software, Indonesia remains one of the few markets where its iconic handsets are still very popular. BB Merah Putih will have full access to the BlackBerry experience, which includes the trusted BlackBerry for Android secure software, for production of new devices in Indonesia. It is being led by local distributor Tiphone Mobile, an affiliate of operator Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom).

Telkom Kenya reorganizes into 4 divisions

(Telecompaper) Telkom Kenya has reorganised its structure into four business divisions: Mobile, Fixed, Wholesale and Real Estate. Under the reorganization, Amer Atwi joins the company as head of the Mobile Business Division. Prior to this appointment, Atwi was the Managing Director at Comium, a mobile operator in Gambia. He also previously worked in various positions at LibanCell, a mobile operator in Lebanon. John Barorot, a seasoned professional in the ICT sector, who started his career at Telkom Kenya and later served in senior management positions at Safaricom and Airtel, rejoins the business as its Chief Technical and Information Officer. George Mokogi, the company's incumbent Chief Carrier Services Officer becomes head of the Wholesale Division. The heads of the Fixed and Real Estate Business Divisions will be named in due course. The company's Chief Finance Officer, Francois Bresson is confirmed in his role of CFO. Steven Evans has been appointed Executive Vice-Chairman of the board and will take over the executive responsibilities for strategy.
