China Mobile improves EBITDA, prepares for 5G as revenues dip lower in H1

(Telecompaper) China Mobile reported revenues down 0.6 percent to CNY 389.4 billion, as government pressure to reduce prices and tough competition weighed on results. EBITDA still grew 3.6 percent to CNY 151.1 billion, good for a margin of 38.8 percent, up 1.6 percent points.

China grants 5G licenses to China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom

(Telecompaper) China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has granted commercial 5G licences to the country's three telecom operators China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, as well as to cable network company China Broadcasting Network. "This [5G license award] marks China's official entry to the 5G era," Huawei said. The company and ZTE both announced they will "fully support" Chinese operators in the deployment of their 5G networks.

FCC chair plans to reject China Mobile application for US licence

(Telecompaper) FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced that the US regulator will vote at its meeting in May on whether to give China Mobile a licence to operate in the US. Following recommendations from government agencies such as the NTIA, the chairman plans to recommend a vote against the licence, based on national security interests.

China Mobile launches first batch of 5G chipsets and devices

(Telecompaper) China Mobile's '5G Device Forerunner Initiative', established at Mobile World Congress 2018, has this year launched its first batch of results, including four 5G chipsets and nine 5G devices. The 5G chipsets will be provided by Qualcomm, Huawei, MediaTek and Unisoc. The nine 5G devices will be released by China Mobile, Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, ZTE, Xiaomi and Samsung. Among the 5G devices, some will support both NSA and SA, while some will have peak throughputs that reach 4.67 Gbps in sub-6 GHz spectrum, the operator said. The first commercial devices are expected to reach the market by June.
