EPA awarded $241,000 to National Environmental Health Association for NEHA Mentorship Program for Developing School IPM Capabilities. Project will promote environmentally sensitive pest management in schools through mentorship program between local health departments and underserved school districts. Health Resources in Action received $300,000 for Keeping the Pests Out: The Economics of Integrated Pest Management in Schools, which will examine costs/benefits of implementing school IPM activities.

EPA announced 38 People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) grants to university student teams for proposed projects to develop new, sustainable products and strategies. Each team will receive up to $15,000 for proposals. This year’s teams are testing innovative ideas such as repurposing chemical byproducts from the mining industry into new concrete that helps inhibit corrosion of steel, and developing food waste collection kiosk that will spur food waste to energy production in the local community.

EPA awards $4 million in grants for drought research.

EPA is awarding $4 million to four institutions to conduct research to combat effects of drought and extreme events on water quality in watersheds and at drinking water utilities. These grants will provide innovative strategies for protecting water quality and public health during periods of drought. Grant recipients include Clemson University; Water Research Foundation, University of Colorado at Boulder; Public Policy Institute of California; and University of Utah.
