Lightning strike fire temporarily shuts down Texas City refinery

A fire caused by a lightning strike temporarily shut down a Valero Energy Corp. refinery just south of Houston on Aug. 20. The lightning strike happened at the San Antonio-based company's refinery off South Loop 197 in Texas City just before 6:30 a.m. The lightning strike caused a fire that ignited the transformer's fuel source, which burned until 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20. No injuries were reported and Chief Zacherl said the fire was self-contained.

GSK temporarily shuts down N.C. site due to bacteria in cooling tower

The GlaxoSmithKline drug manufacturing facility in Zebulon has been temporarily shut down due to bacteria found in the cooling towers. Spokeswoman Jenni Brewer Ligday confirmed that the site was shut down Tuesday as a result of "routine testing found bacteria in the cooling towers."

When U.S. software giant Microsoft bought Nokia's struggling mobile phone business last year, the inhabitants of Salo - a town of 54,000 in southern Finland - thought the move would revive the local economy. But their hopes were crushed last week when Microsoft announced it would close Nokia's former product development unit in the town, putting all 1,100 jobs at risk.
