Samsung unveils Galaxy S5 at MWC
2014-02-24 20:14:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics announced at Mobile World Congress the fifth generation of the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy S5. The flagship smartphone offers the latest technical specifications, including a 5.1-inch Full HD Super Amoled screen, 2.5 GHz quad-core processor, Android 4.4.2, 16 megapixel back camera and 2.1 megapixel front camera, 2,800 mAh battery, 2 GB RAM and 16 or 32 GB internal storage, plus a microSD card slot supporting up to 64 GB additional storage. For connectivity, it offers LTE CAT 4 to support a wide range of spectrum bands at up to 150/50 Mbps, as well as dual-band Wi-Fi with 2x2 MIMO. In addition, the new Download Booster Wi-Fi technology accelerates the data speed by bonding Wi-Fi and LTE simultaneously. In line with other premium devices on the market, Galaxy S5 offers a range of new camera features, including what Samsung claims is the fastest autofocus at 0.3 seconds and the High Dynamic Range to reproduce natural light and a wide range of colours. The video recorder also supports Ultra HD at 30 fps. In terms of design, the Galaxy S5 features a perforated pattern on the back cover for a "modern glam look". The sleek, contoured shape will be available in a choice of black, white, blue or gold, and the smartphone also offers IP67-level resistance to dust and water. Finally, Samsung added the Finger Scanner for biometric authentication using a fingerprint, and the Ultra Power Saving Mode to power down the display to black and white and limit active functions in order to save on battery. The Galaxy S5 will launch in April worldwide.

Samsung Galaxy S5 unveiled: Fingerprint scanner, 16-megapixel camera, but still a plastic body
2014-02-24 20:00:54| Extremetech
At it's Unpacked event in Barcelona, Samsung has released the Galaxy S5 -- and, to the surprise of everyone, three new smartwatches: the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit. We'll talk about the smartwatches in a separate story; we'll focus on the Galaxy S5 here. The Galaxy S5 is, for all intents and purposes, the Galaxy S4 but with a few cool new features: A fingerprint scanner, a heartbeat sensor, and some tech that constantly calibrates the OLED screen to compensate for ambient lighting, to ensure that those gaudy super-saturated colors are always present no matter the conditions. The Galaxy S5 is indeed splash-proof (similar to the S4 Active), but not ruggedized.

Samsung unveils trio of Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit smartwatches none run Android
2014-02-24 20:00:10| Extremetech
Doubling down is so 2013: At its Unpacked event in Barcelona, Samsung has tripled down on smartwatches, unveiling the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit. There's no "Galaxy" in their names because they don't run Android; the first two run Tizen (and are therefore the world's first commercial Tizen devices), and the Fit runs Samsung's proprietary RTOS (real-time OS). Samsung says all three watches will last up to three days between charges -- a massive improvement over the original Gear's ~24-hour battery life.
