Safety alert issued by FAA to commercial passenger and cargo airlines urges them to conduct safety risk assessment to manage risks regarding transportation of lithium batteries as cargo. Also, guidance issued by FAA to its own inspectors helps them determine whether airlines have adequately assessed risk of handling and carrying lithium batteries as cargo. Safety risk assessment process further helps airlines that don't carry lithium batteries from inadvertently accepting them for transport.

"The Impact of Oversize Loads on Our Nation’s Bridges," issued by NTSB, reminds motor carriers of importance of obtaining permits and carefully reviewing routes before transporting oversize loads. Along with May 2013 crash near Mount Vernon, WA, this Safety Alert cites March 2015 crash in Salado, TX. Both involved trucks carrying oversize loads that struck bridges and caused collapses. NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart called planning ahead "critical" when transporting oversize loads.

Safety officer fired for raising safety issues wins lawsuit challenging credentials
