Airfares set to fall as United Airlines launches Auckland-San Francisco route

Airfares are set to fall as Air New Zealand loses its monopoly on flights from New Zealand to the mainland United States. American airline United Airlines will begin flying from San Francisco to Auckland from July 1, resuming services after dropping Auckland as a destination in 2003.

U.S. antitrust officials investigating whether the nation's four largest airlines colluded on pricing are looking at executives' communications - not only with each other, but also with their biggest shareholders. The Justice Department's antitrust division has asked the carriers - American Airlines Group Inc., United Continental Holdings Inc., Delta Air Lines Inc. and Southwest Airlines Co.- for details about meetings with their major shareholders in which "industry capacity" was discussed, according to an official information request reviewed by Bloomberg News.

Travel notes: Delta bans some travel sites from posting its airfares

Delta Air Lines has banned several travel websites from posting its airfares and routes as part of a bigger trend in the airline industry that has made it harder for travelers to comparison shop. That is the conclusion of a study by a Yale economics professor who estimates that travelers are losing out on more than $6 billion in savings a year because of the limits to shopping.
