Archangel Lightworks is a startup specialised in space laser communications based in Harwell Space Campus, Oxfordshire. Founded in mid2017, we have secured longterm funding and successfully demonstrated several novel prototypes related to laser transmission and efficient perpendicular solar concentration. Our mission is to make 10x more data download possible to meet the demand from the growing satellites market, especially smallsats, delivering more data from the earth orbit to the ground at higher speed. This project will be developed directly with the European Space Agency. Role Responsibilities We are passionate about innovation and driven to find new concepts for communications architectures. We are seeking an ambitious and experienced talent with a strong background in thermal mechanical design engineering to join our rapidly growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the tradeoff analysis of payload mechanical and electromechanical design for communication payloads and working closely with systems engineering. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Preliminary and detailed design of payload enclosures, telescope mechanical assemblies, high precision actuation mechanisms for space and airborne environments. Design and manufacturing of test equipment, working closely with AIT personnel. Clear and concise technical presentation of work to the team and mentoringteaching of junior staff. Planning, completing and documenting validation and qualification testing of new designs. Participating in Design Reviews throughout each phase of payload development. Generate 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings. Managing and meeting cost and weight targets. Interested applicants may also consider starting first as a fixedterm consultant while rolling into a permanent role, which we would willingly support depending on your ability to deliver, innovate and lead. Required skillsexperience Extensive experience using professional CAD software Solidwoks, AutoCAD, other. Solidworks preferred. Experience developing a thermal optomechanical systems. Experience developing mechanical, optomechanical systems for space environments. Experience with active and passive TCS hardware. Educated to degree level or equivalent in Aerospace Engineering or related discipline. Desirable additional skillsexperience Experience performing include Aerodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics analysis of designs. Experience with Matlab and software. Other programming languages are desirable. Knowledge of icing problems in an aerospace context. Proven track record of problem solving for thermal systems in an aerospace context. Experience using simulation tools one of ANSYS, CFD, Inventor to simulate complex thermal and mechanical problems. ANSYS preferred. Experience working on Cubesat projects, UAV, HAPS projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the architecture, interface definition, and documentation for a new free space optical communication project. Specific job responsibilities include but not limited to Design and implementation of system models and design optimisation. Technical system requirements reviewgeneration, analysis, evaluation, reducing bottlenecks and management at all levels. Conducting formal technical reviews of supplier and internal deliverables. Ownership, documentation, maintenance of technical budgets Mass, Power, Link, Errors etc. Support and guide junior systems engineers working on the project team Supporting systems integration, test and demonstration. Management and coordination of engineering team on a technical level. Ownership and responsibility over the technical developments of the projects. Contribute to the progress of overall technical strategy. REQUIREMENTS Required skillsexperience Practical experience within the space industry, knowledge of system engineering processes and practices, ideally as lead. Experience with communication system architectures, particularly Free Space Optical Communication. Experience in generating and analysing technical requirements, and articulating technical arguments to demonstrate compliance to those requirements Degree in Engineering, Physics or equivalent technical field, MscPhd preferred Proficient English, positive attitude, selfdriven and interested in working in a startup environment Independent, quick learner, can structure and show initiatives to thoroughly evaluate and solve problems from different angles, proactively push progress forward Desirable additional skillsexperience Experience in system design and optimisation, ideally communicationoptical. Some working knowledge of free space optics. Lasers, optics, photonics, detectors and FPAs, technology and system trade studies related to lasercom link budgets, atmospheric modeling, acquisition, pointing and tracking, jitter stabilization, communications theory, optical modem designs, and performance testing of optical components, subsystems and complete links. Experience with functional, performance testing, verification and validation against requirements. Experience in technical assessment and review of systems. Experience of the full new product introduction lifecycle concept definition to product launch Integration of systems, hardware or software with military or civil aircraft. Experience working on Cubesat projects, UAV, HAPS projects.
