Germany emits more of most potent greenhouse gas in 2014

2015-05-28 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: German emissions of sulfur hexafluoride, the most potent of all greenhouse gases, rose 13 percent last year compared with 2013 levels, according to data from the federal statistics office published on Wednesday. Sulfur hexafluoride emissions increased by 104 tonnes to 916 tonnes in total last year, but were still 16 percent lower than 2012, the statistics office said. The most potent of all greenhouse gases, sulfur hexafluoride has a global warming effect some 22,800 times that of carbon dioxide...

Clearing of Amazon rainforest for agriculture emits 54 million tons of carbon per year

2014-07-10 07:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: The selective logging and burning of trees carried out to clear land for farming in the Amazon rainforest releases 54 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year, according to a new study. While rainforests are invaluable because of their biodiversity and importance to global ecosystems, they also provide an essential service, as trees store significant amounts of carbon. When released, this carbon can be a big contributor to climate change. Such concerns have prompted worries over...

Fracking Emits Less Methane than Estimated Says Study

2013-09-17 00:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: Fracked natural gas wells leak much less methane -- a potent climate change-driving greenhouse gas -- at certain points during the production process than previous studies and the Environmental Protection Agency have estimated, according to a University of Texas study released Monday. Methane is one of the chief components of natural gas locked up in underground shale formations -- the target of a natural gas drilling boom stretching from Pennsylvania to the Rockies and beyond. Energy companies...
