Google has acquired Emu, a text-messaging app with a built-in virtual assistant created by a veteran of Apple's Siri team. The Emu team announced the acquisition in a blog post Wednesday. Emu and Google did not disclose the details of the deal.

Google lowers search ranking of websites that don't use encryption

Websites that aren't encrypting connections with their visitors may get a lower ranking on Google's search engine, a step the company said it is taking to promote better online security practices. The move is designed to spur developers to implement TLS (Transport Layer Security), which uses a digital certificate to encrypt traffic, signified by a padlock in most browsers and "https" at the beginning of a URL.

Google ships 64-bit Chrome for OS X

Google has promoted the 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows to the browser's more stable Beta distribution channel, and boosted Chrome for OS X to 64-bit on the more preliminary Canary and Dev builds. Chrome for Windows 64-bit shifted to Beta on July 30 after about two months on the less-polished Canary and Dev lines. Google has touted the 64-bit version as more stable and faster than its 32-bit predecessor, which has been the Chrome standard since its 2008 debut.
