Back in January, we wrote a story about which company makes the most reliable hard drives. At the time, Hitachi came out ahead of Western Digital and Seagate by a significant margin. Now, with new data from our friends at Backblaze who have 34,881 hard drives spinning their little hearts out as you read this sentence, we're going to try and investigate the matter of why there's so much variation between the reliability of the big three hard drive makers.

Reuters: World carbon dioxide emissions will hit a record high this year, driven by China's growth and keeping the world far off track from the deep cuts needed to limit climate change, a study said on Sunday. More than half of proven fossil fuel reserves may have to stay in the ground if governments are serious about a promise made in 2010 to limit a rise in average temperatures to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6F) above pre-industrial times, the Global Carbon Project report by leading research institutes said....

Western Digital's (WD) HGST subsidiary on Tuedsay announced it has added 8TB and 10TB hard drives to its HelioSeal product line, which hermetically seals in helium in order to reduce internal drive friction and power use. WD also announced its first NVMe (non volatile memory express) product with a PCIe-attached flash drive; the company also announced a new 2.5-in solid-state drive (SSD).
