Massive wildfires have the world's deepest lake surrounded

2015-08-25 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mashable: Dozens of large wildfires are burning out of control around Lake Baikal in Siberia, which is the world's largest freshwater lake by volume and the deepest lake, at more than 5,300 feet deep. The Lake Baikal area is a popular recreational area during the summer, with campgrounds and cottages surrounding the shoreline. Because of the composition of the soil in this part of the world, these fires are spewing unusually high amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to global warming....

Curbing climate change: The Deepest Cuts

2014-09-19 01:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Economist: ON SEPTEMBER 23rd 120-odd presidents and prime ministers will gather in New York for a UN meeting on climate change. It is the first time the subject has brought so many leaders together since the ill-fated Copenhagen summit of 2009. Now, as then, they will assert that reining in global warming is a political priority. Some may commit their governments to policies aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. What few will say is how many tonnes of carbon dioxide these will save--because they almost...

Into the abyss: Scientists explore one Earth's deepest ocean trenches

2014-04-11 02:37:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

TG Daily: What lives in the deepest part of the ocean--the abyss? A team of researchers funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) will use the world's only full-ocean-depth, hybrid, remotely-operated vehicle, Nereus, and other advanced technology to find out. They will explore the Kermadec Trench at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The trench, located off New Zealand, is the fifth deepest trench in the world. Its maximum depth is 32,963 feet or 6.24 miles (10,047 meters). It's also one of the coldest...

Climate change affecting deepest depths of Antarctic ocean, study finds

2014-03-04 14:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: The impacts of climate change are being felt at even the deepest depths of the Antarctic ocean, a new study has found, in a discovery that may explain a 40 year old mystery. In the mid-1970s, the first satellite images to be studied of Antarctica during the polar winter discovered a strange phenomenon. In the Weddell Sea, researchers noticed a huge ice-free region known as a polynia that remained open for three winters. Scientists found that the polynia was kept open by warm waters that...
