The Position Climate change is affecting our life more and more, therefore not only weather forecasting but also Earth Observation are facing new challenges. New needs for higher temporal, spatial and spectral resolution, new instruments, all this becomes reality with the EUMETSAT Polar System EPSSG, which will be launched and operated by our customer EUMETSAT in 2022. For our team onsite EUMETSAT, we are looking for an Instrument Data Processing Engineer to support the development of test data and test tools with a strong focus on the various instruments on EPSSG. This position is based at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt. It is fulltime and permanent and expected starting date will be around July 2020. We are looking forward to meeting you! ResponsibilitiesDuties Your principal task will be the continuous development of various tools for the overall system and ground segment Validation Verification VV. You will work in strong cooperation with our team and EUMETSAT engineers across the organization. To challenge your skills, we will involve you directly in the VV of the data processing chains of the different instruments onboard EPSSG. QualificationsExperience What are we looking for? Maybe for you, with at least 3 years of background in satellite instruments with a proven focus on Data Processing for earth observation. Of course, you are easily understanding the relating physics processes in such satellite instruments together with a university degree in the domain of engineering, science or equivalent. Essential Skills We need you with professional skills in CC, Python, or Java in a LinuxUnix environment and the latest software development tools and methods are your daily business. We dont have to tell you about onground data processing systems or test data sets. Teamwork and ones own initiative is what you enjoy Capable of working both individually and independently on assigned responsibilities, while you are part of the system team. We are of course looking for good interpersonal and communication skills! NonEssential Skills Ideally, you are already familiar with various types of spaceborne observation techniques. EPSSG satellites will embark sounders and imagers from the ultraviolet to the microwave range. Furthermore, a scatterometer, and a radiooccultation instrument will be part of this future mission. We are looking for a Data Processing System Engineer Responsibility The following responsabilies are foreseen not limited to Followup on the ground segment facility suppliers activities Review of the data pack delivered for the reviews Support preparation of deliverables to other Contractors Participation in other Contractors reviews in the frame of PDR, CDR, acceptance of different version of ground segment Support for the Data pack for the OGS CDR and possibly other intermediate checkpoints Support of the relevant OGS and System activities Technical baseline engineering monitoring and update Tests and acceptance phases preparation Profile Mandatory skills University degree or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the job profile. At least 3 years relevant in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems for Earth Observation missions experience on data processing for high data rates missions will be considered an asset More than 4 years relevant experience with L1L2 processing software for Earth Observation missions, either for operationsmaintenance or specification and development. Demonstrated experience knowledge of the requirements engineering process, including relation between requirements, ICDs, design and testing documentation Demonstrated ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the implementation of the service. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context Demonstrated experience with UNIXLinux operating systems. EPSSG is the European component of the Joint Polar System JPS, which is based on a cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA. EPSSG will be based on a twosatellite configuration with the launch of MetopSG A in mid2021 followed by the second satellite MetopSG B 18 months later. Two recurrent MetopSG A and B satellites will be provided and launched in order to achieve a minimum of 21 years of operations. While EUMETSAT relies on a cooperation with the European Space Agency ESA for the development of the satellite and of a subset of instruments, EUMETSAT will develop and procure a dedicated Ground Segment GS. Existing technologies and infrastructure elements that are already in operation in the EUMETSAT headquarters shall be capitalized as well as the Satellite Application Facilities SAF network. Typical tasks will include Definition and development of the onground instrument data processing specifications e.g. algorithms and product formats Development of the onground instrument data processing systems, test tools and test data Verification, integration and acceptance of the onground instrument data processing elements Validation of data processing algorithms and products Reviews, verification and testing of onground instrument data processors against appropriate versions of requirements, specifications and reference processors System engineering activities in collaboration with EPSSG System and Ground segment teams Interactions with Space Segment teams and analysis of instrumentrelated documentation Formal reviews and technical meetings at system and ground segment level Preparation of documentation for system and ground segment level reviews in relevant areas. QualificationsExperience University degree in the domain of engineering, science, or equivalent At least 3 years of experience in engineering of onground data processing elements for spaceborne observing imaging andor sounding systems. Essential Skills Good skills in higher programming languages such as CC, Java, IDL, Python Experience in verifying onground instrument data processing systems Experience in development of test data sets and processor prototypes Desirable Skills Knowledge of relevant spaceborne observation instruments EPSSG satellites will embark sounders and imagers from the ultraviolet to the microwave range, a scatterometer and a radiooccultation instrument Experience in specification of operational products for earth observation missions.
