We are looking for a Systems and Applications Engineer, who will support the Processing Applications Engineering team at EUMETSAT, Darmstadt. You will be challenged with a large variety of tasks supporting the routine operations of GEO and LEO Earth Observation mission as well as the operations preparation of furtue missions. This position is based at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, is full time and permanent. We are looking forward to meeting you! ResponsibilitiesDuties At our customer EUMETSAT you will be tasked with the maintenance and evolution of the facilities and systems of different Earth Observation missions such as the EUMETSAT Polar System EPS, Jason, or Meteosat Second Generation MSG. This includes a wide range of tasks, from the support of the daytoday operations and maintenance, to the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures. You will also be the technical interface to external contractors. In detail your work will include Maintenance and development of the Data Processing Systems Application Software Procurement activities for maintenance and evolution activities Definition and design of architectures of data processing ground segments and their components, interfaces, and the validation verification methods Coordination Inputs to planning and preparation of releases Coordination with other teams in and outside of EUMETSAT Generation and maintenance of technical baseline documentation Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments QualificationsExperience You have a university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as IT, Astrophysics, Physics, Meteorology, etc.. You love to code. You are used to challenge large, UNIX LINUX based, complex, realtime data processing systems. You know how to specify their requirements and design, how to maintain them. Essential Skills You have proven experience in CC coding You are used to work with scripting languages such as PERL, shell, etc. You know how to work with software building environments and tools e.g. IBM XL C and GCC compilers, make, automake, autoconf, RPM You have gained very good technical writing skills You have already been working on requirements specification and design documentation, test plan procedures, and maintenance procedures You are experienced in using source code control systems e.g. Subversion, Git Analysing, debugging, profiling, fixing and processing of software anomalies are your hobby You are able to work effectively in English. Big Data Engineer

You will have the opportunity to provide your expertise in the area of the Big Data technologies e.g. ApacheStorm, Apache Kafka, etc. expected to be used for orchestrating the EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation EPSSG processing chains. These processing chains will be exercised through the EPSSG Payload Data Acquisition and Processing PDAP subsegment which will be part of the EPSSG Overall Ground Segment OGS. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Familiarize with the relevant components of the EPSSG programme, the design of the EPSSG Overall Ground Segment OGS and its PDAP subsegment with a focus on the DPI subsystem. Provide expertise and advice on Big Data Technologies used by DPI. Contribute to the review of DPI related technical documentation. Support to follow the development and testing of the DPI. Investigate possible further optimizations of the DPI design. Support to assessment of EPSSG Operational Processors. Provide training on Big Data Technologies. Provide support to the RHEA business related to BIG DATA and our internal projects. For our customer in Darmstadt we are looking for a Data Processing System Engineer to support current and future Earth observation missions. Our customer EUMETSAT is an independent intergovernmental organisation founded in 1986 to establish maintain and exploit European systems of operational meteorological satellites and to contribute to the operational monitoring of the climate and the detection of global climate changes. A further objective of EUMETSAT is to provide data, products and support services to the European Copernicus information services and user communities, with a focus on marine, atmosphere and climate. EUMETSAT is governed by a Council representing 30 Member States and 1 Cooperating State. The EUMETSAT Technical and Scientific Support Department TSS provides support to operations of existing satellite systems and to the development of new programmes. Currently EUMETSAT operates the Meteosat Second Generation MSG, the EUMETSAT Polar System EPS and the Copernicus Sentinel 3 space and ground satellite systems. In addition, EUMETSAT is contributing to the operation of a number of other missions, such as JASON, and some other 3rd Party Missions. The focus of routine operations at EUMETSAT is the provision, by effective utilisation of all elements of the space and ground systems, of timely and reliable operational services to the users. For the future, several new missions are in preparation such as Meteosat Third Generation MTG, EPS Second Generation EPS SG, Sentinels follow on and others. Within the System Engineering and Projects Division SEP of the Technical and Scientific Support Department TSS, the Contractor will provide services to the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence area supporting the Data Processing and System Engineering activities of the EUMETSAT ground segments in development andor under operations. This includes data processing system engineering for supporting Integration, Verification Validation IVV activities at the level of test plan definition, test specification and test coordination. Tasks The task of the candidate shall be to support activities related to phases CD of the Jason CS Programm in the area of data processing engineering. In detail, during CD of the mission, the candidate will Contribute to the procurement of data processing elements by advising on technical solution proposed by the contractor, and reviewing documentation to confirm its compliance with the requirements Contribute to the management of the requirements baseline for data processing elements Contribute to the review of product generation specifications for Level0, Level 1 and Level 2 processors Contribute to the refinement of ICDs Contribute to testing, integration and acceptance of data processing elements In phase E the candidate will Contribute to maintenance activities, including characterisation of system component behaviour against required performance, proposal and implementation of system alterations to achieve required performance Contribute to evolution activities, including conceptual design, requirements specification, system analysis and concept development to support increased performance, and cost reduction In addition there will be regular involvement in the following tasks requiring interaction and coordination with other teams at System and Ground Segment Level Review of System, Space Segment and Ground Segment documentation dealing with requirements, concepts, L0L1L2 algorithms and technical analysis of relevance for data processing, including review of instrument data processing algorithms, product format descriptions and calibration concepts defined by the space segment with emphasis on their implications on ground segment data processing concepts, interfaces and architecture. Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings at System and Ground Segment level Review of documentation dealing with technical evolutions of the EUMETSAT infrastructure. Skills and Experience In addition to a university degree in a relevant technical discipline such as engineering or physics or software the candidate shall have a background including the following skills and experience Relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data processing systems for Earth Observation missions experience on data processing for high data rates missions will be considered an asset. Relevant experience with L0L1L2 processing software for Earth Observation missions, either for operationsmaintenance or specification and development Knowledge of the requirements engineering process, including relation between requirements, ICDs, design and testing documentation Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of Jason CS, including the ability to rapidly absorb and make use of information presented in written and oral communications Willingness to work within a multidisciplinary context in cooperation with other teams.The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. Finally, the applicant shall have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written in English are important.
