Staff are supported by local Country based offices We offer our staff a number of additional benefits and assistance For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to employ Scientist to support science operations of the Venus Express mission located at ESAC. One of the components in science operations is the task of generating the commands to operate the scientific payload of a spacecraft. Three main entities are involved in this task the PI teams having built the experiments, a Mission Operations Center MOC which coordinates the satellite operations and a Science Operations Center SOC which coordinates the operations of the scientific payload. The main tasks of the VEX SOC are defined in the Science Management Plan for the respective missions and are summarized here Definition of scientific operations for all mission phases with Principal Investigator PI team support Mission planning and implementation of experiment operation schedules Coordination and prechecking of command sequences for the operations of their payload before submission to the MOC Support the PI teams with software necessary to prepare the operational timelines. Together with the PI teams, the creation of a summary of the main scientific results, at regular intervals or for mission highlights The VEX Science Operations are led by the SOC Operations Manager in close coordination with the Project Scientist, who is responsible for optimizing the science return of VEX. The Venus Express Mission Manager has the overall responsibility for the Venus Express mission and its implementation. The SOC Operations Manager is supported by a number of operational engineers and scientists forming the VEX Science Operations Center VSOC team. A basic principle of the Venus Express science operations is the requirement for a strong involvement by each PI team for the preparation of the science operations. The Science Working Team SWT advises the project scientist on science matters for the mission and indirectly assists VSOC in elaborating science strategies and maximizing the scientific return of the mission. The Science Activity Plan and the Medium Term Plans are the basis for all science operations planning. For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to employ a highly Scientist to support ESAESAC Science Gaia Operations. Gaia is a major astrophysics mission within the ESA science programme. A large and active scientific community is deeply involved in the preparatory tasks for the mission, in particular for the data processing and analysis tasks. These tasks are the responsibility of the scientific community, organized under the umbrella of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC. This consortium consists of more than 400 active scientists and engineers making significant contributions to the preparations for the ultimate product of the Gaia mission the Gaia catalogue. The Project Scientist is responsible for all scientific aspects of the mission. A small team of scientists assists him in this task. One aspect is the support of DPAC activities through the provision of essential information services, ensuring access to ESA provided resources, maintaining a current and archive document system, and ensuring effective information flow between all parties involved. This support will be the primary concern of the candidate. The successful applicant will be a member of the Gaia Project Scientists Support Team based in RSSD at ESTEC. The role of the team is to support and advise the Gaia project team, the Gaia Science Operation Centre team at ESAC and the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC on all scientific aspects of the mission. Within the team the candidate will be expected to support the daytoday activities of the SOC and DPAC by acting as Information Manager within the team, ensuring access for SOCDPAC to the resources provided by the Project Scientist, supporting activities in the domain of outreach to the Gaia scientific community within the boundaries established by the existing ESA infrastructure.
