A group of Brazilian telecoms operators are now ready to bid for rival TIM ParticipaA A es SA, a source with knowledge of the situation said, after the group's leader, Oi SA, got the go-ahead to sell its Portuguese business. However, top management at Telecom Italia SpA, TIM's majority owner, is preparing for a meeting with Brazilian officials next week to put out feelers before deciding whether to turn the tables and make their own bid for Oi, two other sources familiar with the plans said.
SK Telecom, Nokia to jointly develop 5G network technologies

(Telecompaper) South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nokia to jointly develop and verify 5G mobile network technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, SK and Nokia will conduct joint research to develop core 5G network technologies such as the gigabit-level data communications technology and cloud-based virtualized base station technology. SK Telecom and Nokia plan to demonstrate 5G in 2018 and commercialize 5G service in 2020. To this end, they plan to establish a test bed at SK Telecom's Corporate R&D Center located in Bundang, Seoul, to verify and demonstrate 5G technologies.

Portugal Telecom shareholders approve PT sale to Altice

(Telecompaper) Shareholders of Portugal Telecom have approved the sale of PT Portugal to Altice. After earlier suspending the vote on the matter, the shareholders at their second gathering agreed to the sale proposed by Oi, which gained control of the Portuguese assets whent the two companies merged last year. Some shareholders had hoped the deal with Oi could still be undone, but Portugal Telecom warned it would only end up in a long court battle. Proceeds from the sale to Altice are expected to help Oi reduce its debt and participate in the consolidation udnerway in the Brazilian market. Portugal Telecom will be left as a holding company with a number of foreign assets, such as stakes in operators in Angola, East Timor and Macau. The sale of PT Portugal remains subject to regulatory clearance.
