Climate Desk: Australia`s top government-appointed climate commissioner says this week`s heatwave is occurring amid record-breaking weather around the world. "This has been a landmark event for me," Professor Tim Flannery told Climate Desk from his home in Melbourne. "When you start breaking records, and you do it consistently, and you see it over and over again, that is a good indication there`s a shift underway--this is not just within the normal variation of things." Flannery is perhaps best known in the...

Do Australia's bushfires emit more carbon than burning coal?

Guardian: "Indeed I guess there'll be more CO2 emissions from these fires than there will be from coal-fired power stations for decades." acting Opposition leader, Warren Truss, January 9, 2013 On Wednesday, leader of the National Party and acting Opposition Leader, Warren Truss claimed carbon emissions from the current bushfires are equivalent to decades of carbon emissions from coal-fired power. Australia's wildfires visible from space

Daily Climate: The face of climate change comes in many shapes these days: A roller coaster sitting in the surf, post-Hurricane Sandy. A farmer tilling in a drought-stressed crop, for a total loss. The latest image comes from space, via NASA: the largely uninhabited Outback of Western Australia at night, lit up like Europe by scores of wildfires. The composite image, NASA notes, was generated from a series of satellite images taken over 22 days in April and October 2012. The fires were not all burning at once....

Heatwave: Australia's new weather demands a new politics
2013-01-08 21:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: I wonder what Tony Abbott will say about the record heatwave now ravaging his country. The Australian opposition leader has repeatedly questioned the science and impacts of climate change. He has insisted that "the science is highly contentious, to say the least" and asked demonstrating what looks like a wilful ignorance "If man-made CO2 was quite the villain that many of these people say it is, why hasn't there just been a steady increase starting in 1750, and moving in a linear way up the graph?"...
