Cisco buys chipmaker Leaba for USD 320 mln

(Telecompaper) Cisco announced an agreement to acquire Israel-based Leaba Semiconductor for USD 320 million cash, plus additional retention-based incentives. The Leaba team will report into Cisco's Core Hardware Group, led by Senior Vice President, Ravi Cherukuri. According to a blog posting by Cisco's VP for business development, Rob Salvagno, Leaba will help the company accelerate its plans for Cisco's next-generation product portfolio and bring new capabilities to the market faster. Leaba is a fabless semiconductor company backed by venture capital and still operating in 'stealth mode'. The company said it's working on "innovative solutions for significant infrastructure challenges" and "assembling one of the best teams of engineering".
Cisco to buy cloud startup CliQr for USD 260 million

(Telecompaper) Cisco has announced its intention to acquire San Jose-based cloud management software specialist CliQr for USD 260 million. CliQr provides an application-defined cloud orchestration platform to model, deploy and manage applications across bare metal, virtualised and container environments. Cisco said the startup's technology will help its customers simplify and accelerate their private, public and hybrid cloud deployments. The networking giant expects the CliQr acquisition to close in the third quarter of its fiscal with the CliQr team joining Cisco's Insieme Business Unit as part of the deal.
Bidder preparing USD 1.1 bln bid for Telecom Argentina stake

(Telecompaper) Argentine businessman Carlos Newbery is preparing to make a bid for Telecom Italia's stake in Telecom Argentina, reports Bloomberg, adding that Newbury is ready to offer 10 percent more than US-backed investment fund Fintech. "The valuation and potential of the company is higher than what has been offered and we are ready to improve it up to USD 1.1 billion," Newbery told Bloomberg. Although Telecom Italia reached a deal back in 2013 to sell its 68 percent controlling stake in Telecom Argentina holding company Sofora to Fintech for USD 960 million, it has so far only been able to divest an initial 17 percent share.

Alibaba in talks for USD 3-4 bln loan - report

(Telecompaper) Alibaba is in talks to borrow up to USD 4 billion to fund expansion plans, including acquisitions, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The discussions, involving several banks, started with plans for a USD 3 billion loan, but the amount could be increased to USD 4 billion, the people said. One source expects the loan to be finalized next month.
Vivendi, Liberty Media agree USD 775 mln settlement

(Telecompaper) Vivendi announced that it has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Liberty Media in March 2003 related to the formation of Vivendi Universal Entertainment in May 2002. Vivendi has agreed to pay Liberty Media USD 775 million to settle, although it rejects having committed any wrongdoing. Vivendi said it was pleased to resolve the long-running dispute on terms it sees as being in the interest of the company and its shareholders.
