Axiata to acquire 80% stake in Ncell for USD 1.3 bln

(Telecompaper) Malaysia-based Axiata Group has agreed to buy Nepalese mobile operator Ncell from TeliaSonera. Axiata thus expands its regional footprint, entering the Nepalese market. Through its subsidiary Axiata Investments (UK), Axiata has entered into a conditional agreement with TeliaSonera and SEA Telecom Investments for the 100 percent acquisition of Reynolds Holdings for USD 1.365 billion. This provides Axiata with an 80 percent equity interest and controlling stake in Ncell.

Investor consortium to acquire Qihoo 360 for USD 9.3 bln

(Telecompaper) Chinese internet company Qihoo 360 has entered into a definitive merger agreement. Qihoo 360 will be acquired by a consortium of investors in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately USD 9.3 billion, including the redemption of approximately USD 1.6 billion of debt.

BlackBerry posts USD 89 mln loss after restructuring costs

(Telecompaper) BlackBerry piosted a USD 89 million net loss (USD 0.17 EPS) in its fiscal third quarter to 28 November. The loss reflects USD 38 million in restructuring and acquisition costs, USD 18 million of amortisation of acquired intangibles, USD 14 million of stock compensation and USD 5 million in debentures fair value adjustment. On a non-GAAP basis, BlackBerry made a USD 15 million net loss (USD 0.03). Some 70 percent of the company's USD 548 million third quarter revenue was recurring. BlackBerry's Adjusted EBITDA came in a USD 114 million and free cash flow at USD 15 million.

Huawei handset sales top USD 2 bln in West Europe in 2015

(Telecompaper) Huawei announced that sales at its Consumer Business Group, selling handsets and other mobile devices, exceeded USD 2 billion in Western Europe in 2015, an increase of 45 percent from the previous year. Huawei said the success reinforces its strategy to focus on the high end of the market, with smartphones like the P8 and Mate S. The company said it will step up its R&D efforts "to provide an outstanding hardware and software experience". Citing data from GfK, Huawei said its smartphone market share reached 10 percent in Italy in October and 13.8 percent in Spain, including 55 percent of the high-end market (EUR 400-500) in Spain. According to the latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Huawei is now the second-largest Android brand in the top five Western European countries. Huawei's own research found that 64 percent of people in Western Europe are now aware of its brand.
