MTA to continue biennial toll, fare hikes

NEW YORK – The biennial toll and fare increases that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has been levying since 2009 are likely to continue, at least in 2017 and 2019.  In a long-range assessment of the MTA's finances, Chief Financial Officer Bob Foran said Wednesday that biennial increases of 4 percent and annual recurring cost savings of as much as $1.8 billion will keep out-year deficits in the $14.5 billion budget to “manageable” levels, $175 million in 2018 and $224 million in 2019.  At the same time, they will ensure that the MTA has some cash to leverage for capital projects or debt service.

Earlier this week, New Jersey Transit formally approved a 9 percent fare hike , and some service cuts, to close a $56 million budget gap. New Jersey's leading transportation expert believes the agency's budget gap next year may be much larger and a more significant fare hike may have to be adopted.

NJ Transit fare hikes could become official Tuesday

A proposal by New Jersey Transit to raise fares on buses and trains an average of 9 percent could be officially adopted by agency officials Tuesday. The plan also includes eliminating some trains on the Pascack Valley and Montclair-Boonton lines, and cutting bus service between Freehold and Philadelphia to Great Adventure and eliminating service between Princeton and Plainsboro.

Airfare hikes less likely, more limited, expert says

Good news for airline travelers: Airfare hikes have become less common and, typically, target specific types of fliers or those in limited geographical areas. That is the analysis of the latest attempts to increase airfares by Rick Seaney, an airfare expert and chief executive of the travel site Farecompare.com.
