California, international leaders sign climate change agreement
2015-05-20 00:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: California and leaders of 11 states and provinces signed an agreement on Tuesday to limit their output of heat-trapping greenhouse gases 80 to 95 percent by 2050, a goal they hope will help prevent runaway climate change. The target, which is based on a 1990 benchmark, will allow the individual governments, which collectively represent more than $4.5 trillion in GDP and 100 million people, to tailor reduction plans to fit their regional needs. Called "Under 2 MOU" for a Memorandum of Understanding...

Climate change could be a threat to electricity supply in Western US
2015-05-19 22:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Verge: Droughts and high temperatures caused by climate change could play havoc with the electricity supply of the Western United States, say engineers in a study published in Nature Climate Change. As of 2010, more than 90 percent of America's electricity is generated by thermoelectric power stations -- facilities that use heat to create electricity, from burning coal to nuclear power. Many plant like this, however, rely on water for cooling, with these facilities accounting for 45 percent of water withdrawals...
Coal & climate change: a death sentence for the Great Barrier Reef

Conservation: Back in 1999, I made an upsetting discovery. By comparing the temperature tolerance of reef-building corals with the projected effects of rising carbon dioxide levels, I found that the oceans would soon grow too warm for corals to bear, meaning that coral-dominated systems like the Great Barrier Reef would disappear within 30-40 years. Much as I tried to find a mistake in my reasoning and calculations, the numbers kept telling me that one of the worlds most diverse ecosystems would disappear...

Ocean Microbes And Climate Change: How Marine Bacteria Are Spurring Global Warming
2015-05-19 15:05:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Business Times: They may be tiny, but they pack a strong punch. Scientists are finding that the smallest ocean organisms can have a major impact on one of the biggest issues of the 21st century climate change. New research has unpacked the role of phytoplankton and ocean bacteria in the formation of sea spray aerosol, the tiny particles that enter the atmosphere and help create the drops of moisture that form clouds, which control earths temperature. It shows that such microbes could actually moderate the chemistry...
