Companies Use Voluntary Carbon Markets for More Than Just Offsetting

Huffington Post: William Theisen says his heart sank when he opened the latest edition of Ecosystem Marketplace's annual survey of voluntary carbon markets, entitled Raising Ambition: State of the Voluntary Carbon Markets 2016. "The first thing we go to is the price," he recalls, "And we were like, 'Oh no, $3.30!'" As Director of Business Development at carbon strategy consultancy EcoAct, low prices are bad for business, and the report identified a record low of $3.30 per metric ton of greenhouse-gas emissions...

Scientists turn carbon dioxide into stone to fight climate change
2016-06-10 06:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Agence France-Presse: Scientists have turned carbon dioxide into stone in a matter of months by pumping it deep underground, offering a revolutionary new way of storing the greenhouse gas to tackle climate change. The pioneering experiment in Iceland mixed CO2 emissions with water and pumped it hundreds of meters (feet) underground into volcanic basalt rock -- where it rapidly turned into a solid. "We need to deal with rising carbon emissions. This is the ultimate permanent storage -- turn them back to stone,' said...
Scientists turn carbon dioxide gas into harmless stone
2016-06-10 00:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: Scientists have a found a quick way but not a cheap one to turn heat-trapping carbon dioxide gas into harmless rock. Experts say the results of a two-year, $10 million experiment called CarbFix , conducted about one-third of a mile (540 meters) deep in the rocks of Iceland, offer new hope for an effective weapon to help fight man-made global warming. When an international team of scientists pumped a carbon dioxide and water mix into underground basalt rocks, basic chemistry took over. The...
Low Carbon Comment on McKinsey Oil Figures

Blue and Green: McKinsey Energy Insights, a network of McKinsey & Company, has published figures that show the demand for oil is likely to peak in 2030 and then decline until 2050. Low Carbon, a renewable energy investment fund, has responded, urging the UK to make a more positive investment in renewable energy technologies. Low Carbon say renewables are an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. Louise Ward, Director of Investor Relations at Low Carbon, said: These predictions reinforce the fact that the...
Norway brings forward carbon neutrality goal to 2030
2016-06-08 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: OSLO Norway's parliament has agreed on a goal to cut the country's net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030, moving the target forward by 20 years, an official at the national assembly said on Tuesday. To achieve this goal, oil and gas producing Norway will have to lower its carbon output or purchase carbon credits to offset its emissions. In 2008, Norway set a similar target of reaching so-called carbon neutrality by 2030, but later pushed the goal back to 2050 when international negotiations...
