As sea level rises, an Alaska village faces an existential dilemma
2014-11-25 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: The Chukchi Sea's unrelenting waves were slowly ripping away the land and homes of the 600 or so residents of this Alaska Native village on a sinking barrier island. U.S. government reports determined that the community was "imminently threatened" with inundation and needed "immediate action" to move to safer ground on the mainland. Villagers voted 161-20 to relocate off the island. Shishmaref, the media proclaimed, would be the United States' first climate refugees. That was in 2002. More...

NASA findings show no excessive methane emissions from Alaska
2014-11-19 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Anchorage Dispatch: Though Arctic Alaska is warming and permafrost is thawing, the area so far has been spared from the scourge of excessive methane emissions, according to data collected by a NASA-managed research project. Concentrations of methane measured in the atmosphere over Alaska from May to September 2012 -- the first of five seasons for NASAs Carbon in Arctic Reservoirs Vulnerability Experiment, or CARVE -- turned out to be about equal to the global average for a similar-sized area. The findings, gleaned...

Polar bear population in frozen sea north of Alaska falls 40% 10 years
2014-11-17 20:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: The number of polar bears inhabiting a frozen sea north of Alaska declined by about 40% from 2001 to 2010, according to a study published on Monday. US Geological Survey researchers and scientists from Canada and the United States found that bear survival rates in the south Beaufort Sea were particularly low from 2004 to 2006, when only two of 80 cubs monitored were known to have survived. Bears overall fared better than juvenile bears in the study. Overall survival rates began to climb in...
Alaska Shows no Sign of Rising Methane Levels, For Now
2014-11-15 00:04:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Nature World: Climate scientists will be happy to hear that Alaska, despite large temperature increases in recent decades, is showing no signs of rising methane levels, at least for now. Previous studies had suggested that methane from Alaskan soils was being released at unusually high rates, but the new NASA-led study, suggests otherwise, and "That's good news, because it means there isn't a large amount of methane coming out of the ground yet," lead author Rachel Chang said in a news release. Methane is...
