Westar Energy customers who want more of their energy to come from renewable sources could have as many as four options if the Kansas Corporation Commission approves. Westar filed a $152-million rate request with the KCC to pay for environmental work at the La Cygne coal-fired plant and safety upgrades at Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station.

KCC OKs Westar Energy pilot plan to offer prepay electric service

In another sign of advancing technology in the utility industry, Kansans will soon be able to prepay for their electric service like they can for their cellphone. The Kansas Corporation Commission voted Thursday to let Westar Energy move forward with the first program in the state that lets customers pay for electricity before they use it.

Westar, KCP&L to Seek Rate Increases In 2015

Westar Energy and Kansas City Power & Light will both ask for rate increases in 2015 to recover some of the costs of environmental upgrades at the LaCygne power plant. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the companies, which co-own the plant in Linn County, spent $1.2 billion on the upgrades and have recovered about half the costs through previous rate cases.
