The percentage fall of US apparel imports in the fourth quarter last year has been different depending on categories. US buyers have found it more or less challenging to replace China, depending on its share of the US import market and the ability of other sources to deliver the products. Wool apparel imports have been depressed by the surge in fiber prices in the meantime. US apparel imports plunged in the fourth quarter last year after additional tariffs have been imposed on Chinese shipments. Imports from China have lost 32% in dollar terms from a year earlier. Other countries have not benefited from the Chinese setback. Turkey's apparel exports have continued to rise significantly in volume terms in the third quarter of 2019, thanks to a new fall of the lira from a year earlier, limiting the rise of prices in euro terms. Risks are rising, however, for Turkish exporters, as inflation remains at a high level in the country.
