AppSense has released MobileNow, a cloud-based service that combines device and application administration features, as it hopes to take a bite out of the growing mobile management market. As the BYOD (bring-your-own-device) trend grows, IT departments are seeking to maintain control while letting employees use their own smartphones or tablets for work. MobileNow joins a host of management tools that are being developed to help address that challenge.

MITs mobile hotspot sharing app aims for free P2P data coverage

Mobile hotspots are already useful, but what if you got rewarded for being a good samaritan? That's the idea driving the research project called Air Mobs. If you share data, you'll get credit for usage down the road. MIT's Viral Spaces research group has developed a peer-to-peer wireless tethering system that encourages users to share as much as they use. The Air Mobs app runs in the background, and decides the appropriate time to turn on and off WiFi sharing to the world.

Yandex says Wonder mobile app blocked by Facebook

(Telecompaper) Russian internet search engine Yandex says that its new experimental application to search on social networking sites from mobile devices was blocked by Facebook, Reuters reports, citing an unnamed Yandex spokesperson. The Wonder app is a recommendation tool for devices using Apple's iOSsoftware that allows US users of social networks to retrieve information from these sites by voice or by typing questions.

Google Maps loses top mobile app slot to Facebook, thanks to Apple Maps

Though Apple Maps was a debacle from a technical standpoint, it was still something of a success in that it cost rival Google Maps the top spot among U.S. mobile apps for 2012. With Apple running interference, Facebook secured the No. 1 position for the year, according to newly released data from comScore.
