AT&T And iHeartMedia Team Up To Bring Streaming Radio To U-verse TV

AT&T and iHeartMedia plan to add additional features to the app later this year, including custom stations created from a library of more than 20 million songs and 800,000 artists, song lyrics, artist biographies, stations "Perfect For" any mood or activity and thousands of podcasts. "Personalization is one of the key features of AT&T U-verse TV, so a highly-customizable app like iHeartRadio is a natural fit," said GW Shaw, vice president of U-verse and Video Products, AT&T.

Microsoft renames Xbox Music as Groove, Video as Movies & TV

(Telecompaper) Microsoft announced on the Windows Blog that it is rebranding Xbox Music as Groove and Xbox Video as Movies & TV as part of the launch of Windows 10. The change will first be seen on Windows 10 PCs before it is rolled out to other devices in the coming months. The ad-free Groove Music Pass subscription costs USD 9.99 a month or USD 99 a year for complete access to stream and download music from Windows Store. Subscribers can also create custom radio stations based on favourite songs, albums and artists. Current Xbox Music Pass holders will be automatically switched to Groove. The Movies & TV app in Windows 10 allows users to play their personal videos, films and TV shows. More file format support has been added, including .mkv files. Movies & TV integrates directly with Windows Store, offering films and TV shows for rent or purchase. New releases are added weekly and TV shows are available a day after they air. Windows Insiders who are a part of the Fast ring and upgrade to the next PC build will see these updates in the Store beta first, while remaining customers will have these updates with Windows 10 starting on 29 July.

EU looks at reform of TV services directive

(Telecompaper) Th European Commission started a public consultation to consider possible changes to the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, which regulates TV services in the EU. As part of the Commission's Digital Single Market strategy, the AVMSD will be reviewed in 2016 to see whether it's working well and if it needs to be changed to take account of new online services offered across borders. The main questions in the consultation are whether respondents think the current directive is working well or should we improved, what roles and responsibilities should market players (broadcasters, on-demand service providers, internet services, telecom operators, etc.) have, and how to protect viewers (particularly children), promote European works and access to information and regulate advertising in the audiovisual online world. The Commission said it particularly wants feedback from users of audiovisual services, and not just market players, in the consultation open until 30 September. Some of the issues under consideration include expanding the scope of the directive. It currently applies to TV broadcasters and on-demand services like Netflix, but not to internet services hosting user-generated content (like YouTube, Vimeo etc). Broadcasters also face stricter rules in some areas, such as facilitating access for disabled people, not showing content that could harm children or promoting European cultural works. The Commission will consider whether these elements should also be extended to on-demand services. In addition, the AVMSD requires companies providing services across the EU to adhere to the rules only of the country under whose jurisdiction they fall. Given the increasingly cross-border media market, this system may be up for reform.

LG, Google join forces for Oled TV marke...

South Korean tech giant LG Electronics is ratcheting up its marketing efforts to foster its organic light emitting diode TV business with an aim to outpace rivals including Samsung Electronics in the world's premium TV market. In line with this strategy, LG announced Tuesday that it would join hands with California-based Google to promote LG's premium OLED TVs.
