IC industry R&D grew 0.5% last year, says IC Insights

Semiconductor industry R&D spend grew by 0.5% in 2015, which was the smallest increase since the 2009 downturn year and significantly below the CAGR of 4% in R&D expenditures during the last 10 years, according to IC Insights' McClean RePort 2016. The half-percent increase nudged worldwide R&D spending by semiconductor companies to a new record-high level of $56.4 billion in 2015 from the previous peak of $54.1 billion set in 2014.

Yale Environment 360: The ocean waters off the Northeastern United States may get even warmer, and this warming may occur twice as quickly as previously thought, according to a new study by researchers for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The findings, based on four global climate models, suggest that ocean temperatures in that region will rise three times faster than the global average. Fares fall as airlines vie to fill seats on overseas flights, Flight Centre says

The lowest airfare between Sydney and Honolulu has fallen 40.3 per cent to $511 return over the last year. A review by Flight Centre of the lowest discount fares to popular destinations has revealed an average 14 per cent fall over the last 12 months amid capacity increases on many of the routes.

Guardian: Solar panels still make financial sense for consumers despite a double whammy of subsidy cuts and a rise in VAT rates, the industry has said. Midnight on Thursday marks the final chance for homeowners to secure the current incentive of 12.47p per kWh for electricity from solar panels. The feed-in tariff scheme then closes to new applicants for three weeks and anyone installing panels will get 4.39p per kWh, a 65% cut that was branded huge and misguided when it was announced just before Christmas....
