Researchers create fiber network that operates at 99.7% speed of light, smashes speed and latency records
2013-03-25 14:15:27| Extremetech
Researchers at the University of Southampton in England have produced optical fibers that can transfer data at 99.7% of the universe's speed limit: The speed of light. The researchers have used these new optical fibers to transfer data at 73.7 terabits per second -- roughly 10 terabytes per second, and some 1,000 times faster than today's state-of-the-art 40-gigabit fiber optic links, and at much lower latency.

Fitel gets green light to upgrade network to XGP
2013-02-11 01:09:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Taiwanese PHS operator First International Telecom (Fitel) has been granted permission to upgrade its existing network to XGP (neXt Generation PHS). Fitel applied late last year to the National Communications Commission (NCC) to be allowed to upgrade its network as demand for PHS services in Taiwan has been shrinking and vendors have stopped supplying equipment, The Digitimes reports citing company information. Associated with the upgrade plan, Fitel plans to raise an additional paid-in capital of TWD 5 billion. The company will replace over 10,000 existing PHS base stations in the Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung metropolitan areas with XGP by the end of this year and aims to begin providing XGP services next year. The company is also in talks with Japanese XGP operator Willcom on procuring terminal devices.
