The City of Dallas was prepared to file suit yesterday against Volkswagen Group of America and Audi of America for civil penalties and injunctive relief when we learned that the State of Texas had sued Volkswagen and Audi earlier in the day for their violations of environmental laws. Since the State has filed its lawsuit and is seeking to protect public health in the City and on a state-wide basis, there is no need for the City to file suit at this time.

Auto industry insiders strongly suspect the emissions cheating scandal at Volkswagen is much wider and reaches higher up the corporate ladder than the company is letting on. Volkswagen's new CEO, Matthias Mueller, was quoted this week as telling a German newspaper that the investigation so far has found that a few software developers tampered with the pollution controls on some of VW's diesel engines.
