California snowpack is at a record low
2015-04-03 23:55:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Grist: The previous record for low snowpack was the 25 percent of normal recorded this time last year, as well as in another period of record drought, from 1976-1977. California has been in the throes of a drought that is now in its fourth year, and that has been linked to climate change. So were not only setting a new low, were completely obliterating the previous record, David Rizzardo, the chief of snow surveys for Californias Department of Water Resources, said during a teleconference held by...

Drought is just the start of California climate woes, says report backed by business heavyweights
2015-04-03 18:22:34| IT Services - Topix.net
Michael Bloomberg, former New York mayor and founder of Bloomberg LP, is a key backer of the Risky Business Project, which supports efforts to mitigate climate change. California's coastal properties, water supplies, agricultural heartland and overall economy could take huge hits by 2050, and bigger ones later, unless we take "immediate action," warns a report backed by Tom Steyer , Henry Cisneros , Hank Paulson and Michael Bloomberg , among other business and policy honchos.

California facing extreme heat waves and rising seas
2015-04-03 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Bloomberg: A day after California imposed mandatory water restrictions to battle a four-year drought, a new study on global warming suggests the worst is yet to come. The average number of days with temperatures higher than 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius) may double or even triple by the end of the century, threatening one of the worlds richest agricultural regions. At the same time, $19 billion in coastal property will likely disappear as sea levels rise, the study found. The report is the...

Epic California drought preview future global warming mega-droughts
2015-04-03 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Mashable: Typically, the snowpack provides up to 30% of the state's annual freshwater resources and is at a seasonal peak depth in early April. But in the face of mild Pacific storms that brought rain instead of snow, as well as drier-than-average conditions and a record-warm winter, the snow cover stood at just 5% of average on April 1, by far the lowest level ever recorded. Conditions are so dire that California Governor Jerry Brown announced on Wednesday the first-ever statewide mandated water restrictions,...

California drought continues to dry up car sales
2015-04-03 15:38:48| Auto Dealers - Topix.net
California Governor Jerry Brown's new edict for restricting water use in his drought stricken state is expected to hit automotive dealerships there harder than ever, and isn't just about keeping vehicles on the lot "clean and shiny," although many dealers have been using recycled water for a long time. It is more about the fact that consumers in many of the agricultural parts no longer have enough disposable income to purchase new vehicles, and it is expected to get worse now that Brown's order requires the State Water Resources Control Board to reduce the water usage of California's 400 local water supply agencies by 25% compared to levels 2 years ago.
