California city hit by gas explosion backs tougher penalty

A San Francisco suburb hit by a deadly gas-line blast in 2010 is supporting a proposed tougher penalty for the utility involved. San Bruno Mayor Jim Ruane said Tuesday that his city backs a plan to add another $200 million to the penalty proposed for Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

Regulators plan to close a case that raised questions about faulty equipment at the shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant in Southern California. Environmental group Friends of the Earth wanted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to review whether operator Southern California Edison sidestepped rules when it replaced steam generators in 2009 and 2010.
