A Democratic state senator and environmental groups cannot intervene in the state's $225 million settlement with Exxon Mobil over contaminated gas stations and other sites, a New Jersey judge ruled Friday. Superior Court Judge Michael Hogan said Friday he denied the request from state Sen. Raymond Lesniak and the four groups because they did not have standing to bring the lawsuit in the first place.

US bankruptcy judge plans approval of Patriot Coal assets

A federal website says a hearing could be held in Richmond on Friday if parties in the case don't agree on language in the judge's confirmation order. Scott Depot, West Virginia-based Patriot says most of its operating assets will be sold to Lexington, Kentucky-based Blackhawk Mining LLC. The Virginia Conservation Legacy Fund plans to use Patriot's other mines and mining permits for purposes of water quality improvement and reclamation.

New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority must run advertisements promoting a film called "The Muslims Are Coming!" in subways, a federal judge ruled. US District Judge Colleen McMahon's decision on Wednesday countered an MTA policy instituted in April that had banned political ads from subways and buses after an anti-Islamic ad by Pamela Geller's American Freedom Defense Initiative caused controversy.

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority to let filmmakers run a series of lighthearted advertisements promoting their film "The Muslims Are Coming!" in the subway. The decision by U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon in Manhattan is a defeat for the MTA, which in April banned political ads from buses and subways after another judge ordered it to display a controversial ad from an anti-Muslim group.
