The decision whether to let environmental groups and a Democratic state senator intervene in New Jersey's long-running environmental cleanup lawsuit against ExxonMobil now rests with a judge. The latest in the 11-year-old case between the Department of Environmental Protection and the petroleum company came Friday when Judge Michael Hogan heard roughly two hours of arguments from a coalition of seven environmental groups and state Sen. Raymond Lesniak on why they should be granted status as parties to the suit.

A class-action lawsuit by former General Motors of Canada Ltd. dealers against the company has been dismissed but their claim against a Toronto law firm has been upheld. The dealers, who were terminated as the auto maker successfully staved off bankruptcy protection under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act in 2009, have been awarded $45-million in damages against Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP.

Lawyers must edit out references to the Chinese government, the Communist Party and the country's People's Liberation Army from a lawsuit complaining that North Carolina neighbors of industrial hog farms have endured terrible smells for decades, a federal judge ruled. U.S. District Judge W. Earl Britt agreed with industry lawyers that the references to Chinese ownership of a major U.S. pork producer are inflammatory and don't belong in the lawsuit.

Dan Pellegrini, Commonwealth Court president judge, on Tuesday denied a UPMC application for a stay of further proceedings in a case in which he ruled that the health system had violated last summer's consent decree when it moved to lock out Highmark Medicare Advantage members beginning next year over a dispute about cancer payments. UPMC has appealed that ruling to the state Supreme Court.
