Judge: Settlement payment to dairy farmers is inadequate

A judge has rejected a proposed settlement between cooperative Dairy Farmers of America and Northeast dairy farmers over an alleged effort to drive down prices paid to farmers. U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss says the payments to farmers from the $50 million proposal are inadequate if there are no significant changes to how the cooperative does business.

The original judgement stipulated that the company was liable to pay the U.S. government restitution over what was initially ruled to be misleading statements by the company when it was competing with GE for a government contract to build the engines for the country's F-15 and F-16 fighter jets in 1983. The appellate court ruling reverses a district court's 2013 ruling in the case and sends the proceedings back to that court which originally found United Technologies liable for six years of overcharges.

Landowners Pat and Terrell Graham won a small victory in the battle with a neighboring developer of the Johnson Ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Administrative law Judge Cathleen Parsley has ruled in favor of the Graham and Lux families recommending that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deny the Johnson Ranch developer, DHJB Development, its permit seeking to take over a dry creek bed on the Lux-Graham family ranch to accommodate discharge of treated sewage and storm water runoff from the Johnson Ranch Subdivision .
