US govt considers making manufacturers produce US-bound equpment outside of China

(Telecompaper) The US government has started a 150-day review of the US telecom supply chain and has started asking telecom-equipment manufacturers if they could make US-bound equipment outside of China, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources close to the matter, which said talks were still at an early and informal stage. The request would affect the manufacture of towers, routers, switches and software, among other products.

Apple urges US govt to call off new round of China tariffs

(Telecompaper) Apple has sent a letter to the US government, urging it to reconsider a new set of proposed tariffs on goods from China. The company sent the letter, shown by the Verge, to US Trade Representative Robert Lightizer, saying the new tariffs would affect Apple's global competitiveness. They would not impact Chinese or other competitors; this would therefore tilt the playing filed in favour of these international competitors. The letter explains USTR's proposal is to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on a fourth set of products imported from China. This round would include all of Apple's major products, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, AirPods and AppleTV, as well as parts and battteries used to repair products in the US and Apple accessories such as monitors and keyboards.

Dutch govt confirms plans for 5G spectrum auctions in mobile white paper

(Telecompaper) The Dutch government has released its long-awaited mobile policy paper, laying the groundwork for two 5G spectrum auctions. The white paper from telecoms secretary Mona Keijzer aims to ensure healthy competition with three network operators and a continued high level of mobile broadband coverage.

Huawei reiterates commitment to transparency, as UK MNOs ask govt for clarity on 5G security
