UK govt publishes plan for full fibre coverage by 2033

(Telecompaper) The UK government has published its 'Future Telecommunications Infrastructure Review', outlining how it plans to bring fibre broadband to the entire country by 2033. The first steps include legislation to require fibre in all new-build homes and GBP 200 million to help cover rural areas.

Belgian govt wants 5G auction to create fourth mobile operator

(Telecompaper) The Belgian Minister for Digital Agenda Alexander De Croo wants to a fourth network operator to compete on the Belgian mobile market. The minister is calling for the 4G and 5G license auction next year to make way for this. The mobile market is currently divided between Orange, Proximus and Telenet. Countries with four mobile networks have lower prices for mobile data, higher data usage and more investments, the minister said in a news report.

ZTE agrees to pay US govt USD 1 bln in exchange for end to sanctions

(Telecompaper) ZTE has agreed pay a penalty of USD 1 billion to end the US commerce department's 7-year ban on buying from US suppliers, CNBC reported, citing a statement from Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. Under the deal struck with the US, ZTE will have to pay the fine and have a US-chosen compliance team embedded at the company. The company will pay for the team. The deal also requires ZTE to change its board of directors and executive team within 30 days.
