US govt puts export restrictions on SMIC

(Telecompaper) The US government has decided to restrict exports to China Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), saying there is an "unacceptable risk" as equipment supplied could be used for military purposes in China, Reuters reported, citing a letter from the Commerce Department. The move means US companies wishing to sell equipment SMIC will have to apply for a licence. US companies such as Lam Research, KLA Corp and Applied Materials, which supply chipmaking equipment, may need to get licenses to ship certain goods to SMIC.

UK govt confirms membership of new Telecoms Diversification Task Force

Arm founder wants UK govt to block Nvidia deal; encourage merger with Graphcore

(Telecompaper) The co-founder of UK microchip company Arm, Hermann Hauser, has called on the UK government to block its proposed sale to US company Nvidia and encourage a merger with Bristol-based AI chip start-up Graphcore. He warns that British processors should not become collateral damage in the trade war between China and the US.

Ethiopian govt plans Addis Ababa data centre, bid document expected in September

(Telecompaper) The Ethiopian government has announced plans to build a national data centre to store information and statistics of all the federal institutions and citizens securely, Addis Fortune reported. The centre will be built by the Ministry of Innovation & Technology and will also offer cloud services, making it the first nationally hosted cloud facility. It will serve as the main data centre for the electronic government system where all the data processing and storage is done.
