Google, Facebook submit revised plan for trans-pacific undersea cable, leaving out Hong Kong

(Telecompaper) Google and Facebook will not, after all, build their long-planned undersea cable between the US and Hong Kong, Bloomberg reported. The move comes after the officials in the US government said the link could be could be used by China to collect information on US citizens. Instead, the companies have submitted a revised proposal that includes links to Taiwan and the Philippines. The new filing does not include Hong Kong-based Pacific Light Data Communication Co, a partner in the original plan and a concern for US security agencies that cited its links to mainland China's Dr. Peng Telecom & Media Group Co. US President Donald Trump has taken a tough stance on China as he pursues re-election.

Google to build new undersea cable linking US, UK and Spain

(Telecompaper) Google has unveiled plans to build what will be its fourth wholly-owned cable and its second linking Europe and the US. The new Grace Hopper undersea cable between the US, UK and Spain with landing points in New York, Bude and Bilbao will be built by SubCom and is expected to be completed in 2022. It's named after the computer science pioneer whose work was critical in the development of the COBOL programming language.

America Movil and Telefonica's Telxius announce new Pacific undersea cable

(Telecompaper) America Movil and Telefonica's infrastructure subsidiary Telxius have announced plans to roll out a new 7,300 km submarine cable along the Pacific coast of Latin America. The two largest telecommunication groups in Latin America said the cable will connect Puerto San Jose (Guatemala) with Valparaiso (Chile) and have additional landing points in Salinas (Ecuador), Lurin (Peru) and Arica (Chile). It will have an initial estimated capacity of 108 Tbps with six fibre pairs offering the lowest possible latency between Guatemala and Chile, combined with the highest levels of service, reliability and security, said the partners in a joint statement.
