We operate Copernicus missions on behalf of the European Union, providing marine and atmospheric data services to monitor the dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems. We are recruiting for a Climate Product Validation Expert to validate and assess the quality of climate records of Level 2 geophysical products produced in support of the Copernicus Climate Change Service C3S through the development of diagnostic methods and tools such as variability, trend estimators and automatic comparisons to model outputs. This is an opportunity to use your expertise to extract geophysical products from data from meteorological or ocean satellites and to use these products in climate research and applications. You will have some experience in managing uncertainties in data, as well as time series analysis. Within this role you will have the opportunity to compile presentations and reports for the C3S progress meetings where observations of the climate are combined with the latest science to develop authoritative quality assured information about the past current and future states of climate in Europe and worldwide. You should be a team player, with the ability to cooperate with your colleagues and our international partners. You should also have strong analytical skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts to our user communities and researchers. Can you apply your background and considerable experience in Meteorology or Remote Sensing to lead scientific developments for the rescue, recalibration and reprocessing of satellite observations to Level 1 products? EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. Developing the next generation of satellites, we look to shape our future. We are recruiting for a Product Expert to work within the Climate Services Division, and to focus on the processing of satellite data to Level 1. This person will lead specific scientific developments for the rescue and reprocessing of satellite observations and the validation of the resulting fundamental climate data records. Specific contributions for imaging and atmospheric sounding instruments operating in the infrared and microwave spectrum will include the development and application of quality control methods for metadata and raw data, the development and validation of instrument corrections and calibration methods plus the derivation of uncertainty examples for Level 1 products. To be successful in this role you will need to support the definition and maintenance of product requirements for EUMETSAT climate data records and the evolution of climate data records and related interactions with EUMETSATs network of Satellite Application Facilities SAFs. You should also be able to compile relevant reports and review scientific publications assessing their relevance for EUMETSAT. We would also expect you to lead specific scientific development for the establishment of fundamental climate data records for atmospheric sounders. The Climate Product Expert should be able to lead small teams of scientists, supporting their developments and reporting on progress, achievements, issues and plans. The role will involve interagency and team working across EUMETSAT and our network of SAFs so we are looking for someone with good interpersonal and communication skills. Expert urges voluntary family planning mitigate climate change
2016-05-30 05:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: With climate change already close to an irreversible tipping point, urgent action is needed to reduce not only our mean (carbon) footprints but also the "number of feet" -- that is, the growing population either already creating large footprints or aspiring to do so, argues a leading physician and environmentalist in The BMJ. Yet John Guillebaud, Emeritus Professor of Family Planning and Reproductive Health at University College London, says most climate change discussions focus only on technology...
