FAA Partners with DHS, CACI, UMD for UAS detection initiative.

In addition to Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) ongoing outreach and education efforts, additional step towards solution regarding unmanned aircraft (UAS) flying close to airport or manned airplane is to detect and identify such "rogue drones" and their operators. FAA partnered with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and CACI International to explore procedures and processes for deploying and operating detection technologies in and around commercial airports.

FAA Smartphone App keeps UAS operators informed of NAS edicts.

FAA Administrator Michael Huerta today announced public release of B4UFLY, which tells users about current or upcoming requirements and restrictions regarding areas of National Airspace System (NAS) in which operation of unmanned aircraft system (UAS) is intended. While post-beta version is available for Apple devices, beta version is available for Android devices. Huerta expressed hopes said app will "help raise public awareness about what it means to operate unmanned aircraft safely."

UAS Registration System is active and ready for public-at-large.

FAA's new Web-based registration system for hobbyists and recreational users who fly small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which include remote controlled aircraft, is active. Owners are required to register any UAS weighing >0.55 lb and <55 lb if they are to be flown outdoors for hobby or recreation. Aircraft operated by current owner before December 21, 2015 must be registered no later than February 19, 2016. For any others, registration is required prior to first outdoor flight.
