FAA has given approval for energy corporation BP and unmanned aircraft systems manufacturer AeroVironment to fly an AeroVironment Puma AE for aerial surveys in Alaska. Hand-launched UAS is about 4 ½ ft long with wingspan of 9 ft. FAA announced that the University of Alaska's unmanned aircraft system test site is the second of 6 to become operational. Agency has granted the University of Alaska Fairbanks a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization allowing flights by Aeryon Scout small UAS for animal surveys at its Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex in Fairbanks. Main purpose of operation is to show how UAS can accurately locate, identify, and count large wild animals for survey operations requested by state of Alaska. First of 6 test sites chosen to perform unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research is operational more than 2 ½ months ahead of deadline. FAA provided North Dakota Department of Commerce team with Certificate of Waiver or Authorization (COA) to begin using Draganflyer X4ES small UAS at its Northern Plains UAS Test Site. Team plans to begin flight operations during week of May 5, and goals include checking soil quality and crops status as well as collecting safety-related operational data.
