A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel on Tuesday voted 13-2 to recommend expanding approval of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc's cystic fibrosis drug Kalydeco to include a wider range of patients with the rare lung disease, the company said. The panel of experts said Kalydeco should be approved for patients ages 6 and older with a specific mutation of the R117H gene, of which there are about 500 people in the United States.

Federal health advisers say a bold-letter warning about suicide risks with Pfizer's Chantix should remain on the anti-smoking drug until it can reevaluated based on new, rigorous study information. Eleven advisers to the Food and Drug Administration voted to retain the so-called black box warning about reports of suicide, hostility and depression among Chantix patients.

Oakland City Council Votes to Approve Garbage Contract Compromise

The Oakland City Council has ended months of controversy by voting to approve a compromise that gives part of the city's garbage contract to a local company and part to Waste Management, the country's largest waste hauler. In voting on Monday night to split the contract between Waste Management and California Waste Solutions of Oakland, the council reversed its vote on Aug. 13 to award the entire $1 billion garbage contract for the next 10 years to California Waste Solutions.
