For the location in Darmstadt Germany we are looking for a Data Services System Architect at EUMETSAT. Tasks The Data Services team is responsible for the development, maintenance and evolution of all data accessdistribution and longterm data archivingretrieval services. The team develops unified solutions that fulfill both the increasing needs of the current operational programmes as well as the additional requirements from the future programmes. EUMETCast is one of the multimission data distribution services that is used to send files data and products to a geographically dispersed user community. This service is implemented using IP multicast over both satellitebased networks DVBSDVBS2 on commercial geostationary telecommunication satellites and WANbased networks GEANT. As a member of the Data Services team, the key person shall provide system architecture engineering support primarily for the evolution, maintenance and routine operations of the EUMETCast service. This includes the multicast servers, multicast networks and multicast receivers. In particular the tasks include in order of importance Evolution o supporting the implementation and testing of the multicast servers at EUMETSAT o supporting the implementation and testing of the multicast transport service with the network service providers o supporting the implementation and testing of the multicast receivers at the remote sites with the external partners o supporting the generation and analysis of user requirements o specifying system and software requirements o designing and prototyping system and software enhancements o supporting the development of system and software enhancements o generating technical documentation o engineering change proposals o system design and design justification documents o interface control documents o verification test plans, test cases and procedures o maintenance procedures o reviewing engineering change proposals and system design documents o participating in technical meetings and formal reviews Maintenance o supporting the integration, verification and validation testing of externally developed systems and software o analysing system and software anomalies o designing system and software corrections o supporting the development of system and software corrections o maintaining the existing system and software documentation o providing advice and guidance with respect to maintenance issues Routine Operations o supporting configuration changes o supporting the deployment of new software releases o supporting verification and validation testing o providing secondline support o providing training to the dissemination operations team o providing maintenance procedures Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline, the key person shall have experience in the operations, maintenance and evolution of data services in a highlyavailable 247 environment. The key person shall have the following mandatory experience and skills System Engineering ExperienceSkills with a minimum of 3 years for each o Networkbased serverclient data distribution applications o Standard file transfer protocols FTP, FTPS, SFTP, HTTPS o HighAvailability systems o Requirements engineering o Supporting end users o Exploiting industry support Software Engineering ExperienceSkills with a minimum of 2 years for each o Software development andor maintenance using an objectoriented approach and following a formal life cycle, i.e. requirements captureanalysis, design, implementation, test and operations o Configuration management and anomaly reportingtracking tools Desirable requirements A practical knowledge of the following technologies and tools would be an advantage Technologies o IP multicast serverclient applications e.g. TelliCast o IP multicast protocols and modes o Managed networks o Advanced Linux system administration o Virtualisation o Serviceoriented system engineering Tools o DOORS o UML, SysML or Enterprise Architect o OO programming languages e.g. Java, C o Shell scripting languages e.g. bash, csh, perl o Subversion o Eclipse Other Information Start date is 1st March 2015 Fluency in English is mandatory Candidates must be an EU citizen or hold a valid German work and residence visa
