According to U.S. EPA's 2014 annual Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report, 84% of 25 billion pounds of toxic chemical waste managed at U.S. industrial facilities was not released into environment due to use of such preferred waste management practices as recycling, energy recovery, and treatment. Remaining 16% was released to air, water, or placed in some type of land disposal – most of which are subject to regulatory requirements designed to limit human and environmental harm.
